Munich: Day Eleven

At this point, nearly halfway through our epic tour, we decided to take a slow day. Partly because of the weather, but also partly because we have walked at least 70 miles in total (our iPhones disagree on distance...mine says 85 miles, but we will be conservative and go with what Phil's says).

We slept in and listened to the rain outside, and had breakfast in bed that I picked up from a cafe downstairs. Our plan originally was to see a few museums, but we found out when researching that the Natural History Museum (where the dinosaurs live) is closed on weekends! It seems that places and things in Munich have (what seem to us) very strange hours. And our other idea was to see a T. Rex skeleton set up in a publishing building. When we got off the train, in station there was a giant billboard advertising this T. Rex...and since we had just seen one in Paris, we thought it would be fun to try to see a T. Rex in every place. Well, this was closed too! Though it said it was located in the atrium, so we decided to just try to see if we could see inside. And it was a success! There was a model T. Rex outside:
And inside was the skeleton of a teenage T. Rex:
After this, we decided to visit the Nazi Documentation Museum, which is meant to provide documentation and testimony about what happened, centered on Munich, between 1918 and 1945. I hadn't realized that Munich is really where Hitler came into power. It was an interesting museum, because there were no "things" to look at - instead, pictures accompanied with text telling what happened, and not shying away from discussing racism and ethnic chauvinism. Looking at what was in the museum, it was sadly easy to draw parallels to what is happening in the US today.

Our last stop was a visit to the State Library of Bavaria, which upon entering we learned is a closed stack library - meaning you can't just wander among the books, and instead have to request them to be brought to you.  You can even leave your requests in the slots outside:

Even though it will still be raining, I'm really looking forward to our day trip tomorrow to a castle!
